Anniversary 3.0 — Best Anniversary Yet

Today is my 3rd anniversary with ProfX. We just had our 8th anniversary of dating…I’ve been informed by some friends that this “doesn’t count,” but since I’m 24 I think 8 years is kind of a big thing. In fact, I think–HOLY FRAK!!

Even though today is the 3rd anniversary of the church wedding and the one we count as our anniversary, we decided to celebrate on Monday the 5th because it’s the anniversary of our legal wedding and our 8th year of dating. I have to say, this was the best anniversary yet.

At the suggestion of some awesome tweeters (including Lyndsay, Terry, and Kelly), we decided to buy a multi-player RPG for our PS2.

I’m barely a gamer—Mario Kart is the most gamey I’ve gotten and even then I don’t have much coordination—and ProfX is very casual—he plays for mental breaks while he’s grading or writing. But it sounded like a lot of fun. I love RPGs and I’ve wanted to learn to game. At their recommendations, we bought Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, which is very much like an RPG.

ProfX suggested that we also break in the Gloom card game I got. Since normally he’s not into cards/board games/RPGs, I was very excited. We played a game of it the night of the 4th and I won. ProfX will probably be up for a rematch now that he knows what he’s doing.

On the 5th, we spent 3 hours playing Dark Alliance together. I’m the elven sorceress (like my D&D half-elven battle sorceress Anya) and he’s the human archer. Didn’t get terribly far, but I’ve really taken to it. All those years watching other people play has taught me the basics of navigation and strategy. Not as good as he is, yet, but learning.

During our dinner break from gaming, we ate Papa John’s pizza (memories of my college RPGing days, Papa John’s was the only one who delivered) and watched more of Doctor Who Series 3. Then more Dark Alliance. I am a slayer of rats, giant spiders, and bugbears.

We’re nowhere near finished Dark Alliance, of course, so we plan to make gaming night a regular event throughout the year. I think it’ll be a lot of fun.

There were no flowers, no dinners out, no dressing up, and no gifts. But we had a great time because we’re us and we did what makes us happy as a couple. Best anniversary yet!

  1. Terry says:

No comment, just a bunch of Yays!

  2. Kelly says:

Also a bunch of YAYS 😀 I’m glad your anniversary went well!

  3. Rosalind says:

That sounds great! Me and my husband are doing dinner tonight because we rarely go out to dinner (and we want to get away from my visiting sister). You and I have a similar relationship track since we were married at the same time, and me and my husband started dating in March 2001, so just a little longer than you two (9 years, yeah that calls for a holy frak as well!), although I’m a smidge older so you two must have high school sweethearts or something!

  4. Kara says:

We’re so the same way, especially when it comes to giving each other gifts. We’re more apt to buy geeky anniversary presents from ThinkGeek or something similar than anything fancy. Though Hub did get a certain awesome Cthulhu and d20 soap on a rope this year. :)

  5. Clayton says:

You track 3 different anniversaries? That’s just madness.

Also I had no idea that Dark Alliance existed, but Baldur’s Gate is a huge dork-fest RPG game for the PC (it plays much more like the pen and paper of yon college days). I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

  6. 8-bit Emma says:

Congratulations! Sounds like you two had a nice time. :)

I have played the Baldur’s Gate on the computer and I too didn’t know about the Dark Alliance version. I’ll have to check it out!

  7. Amy says:

    More yays!

That sounds like a perfect anniversary evening too. Game playing + pizza = amazing. I’m glad you had a lovely night.

  8. Revanche says:

Twitter wouldn’t let me make any suggestions (dammit Echofon or whatever is on my iPhone!) but your final day was way better than anything my brain had on tap that early in the morning. :)

  9. Ruth says:

@Terry & Kelly Yay! *flails happily* Your idea was great. :)

@Rosalind Anniversary buddies! one of us was in highschool

@Kara I was very excited Cthulhu got to be an anniversary present. :)

@Clayton Well, we wouldn’t if they weren’t 2 days apart.

    @Clayton & Emma I haven’t played Baldur’s Gate, but this is pretty strongly RPG-based.

@Amy So glad we went with what actually made us happy. Pretty sure I’ll remember it.

@Revanche Thanks for the thought anyway! :)
